HP Launches Exciting All-New Consumer PC Lineup

Today, HP announced its new lineup of consumer notebooks, from an 11-inch touchscreen all the way up to its high-end ENVY 17 models. Some of the new systems will ship with some of Intel's next-generation Core CPUs (codename: Haswell) as well as optional discrete graphics powered by NVIDIA, while others will use powerful new AMD APUs.

HP Pavilion HP Pavilion

Mainstream Notebooks

HP unveiled new additions to their bread-and-butter Pavilion lineup: the HP Pavilion 14, HP Pavilion 15, and HP Pavilion 17 notebook PCs. You'll be able to get both AMD and Intel variants, and up to a full terabyte of hard drive space. Given their budget nature, however, don't expect to see anything more than a 1366x768 panel in these guys - even on the 17-inch model (92dpi).

They do come in some pretty attractive colors, though, taking advantage of HP's unique 'imprint' coloring functionality. You'll be able to pick from one of five different colors - black, white, red, blue, and purple.

HP Pavilion HP Pavilion

Performance Notebooks

New entries to the ENVY lineup cement the replacement of the old dv line of higher-end consumer notebooks. Like the Pavilions, you'll be able to get both AMD and Intel variants. The ENVY notebooks come with up to 1080p screens and unnamed NVIDIA CPUs. There will be touchscreen variants of the 14- and 15-inch models, sold under the TouchSmart lineup. The 14-inch also qualifies as an Ultrabook under Intel's rules.

While the Pavilion notebooks come with DTS sound, the ENVY models will ship with Beats Audio as part of HP's continuing partnership with the company. On the two larger models, that partnership comes with some extra features: more speakers. While the vast majority of notebooks on the market give you just stereo sound, the ENVY 15 and ENVY 17 will ship with a whopping four speakers and a subwoofer - the ENVY 17's subwoofer is also dual-drive.

11-inch Wonderbooks

Perhaps most excitingly, HP will be offering an all-new replacement for the fantastic dm1 notebook. The big change is that the new Pavilion 11 TouchSmart will ship across the board with a 10-point, multitouch capacitive touchscreen. In fact, a non-touch model isn't even on the books. You'll get partial metal construction, video out ports - basically everything you've come to expect from the dm1 lineup. Plus the touchscreen. That said, don't worry about the touchscreen forcing up the price points - HP is trying to keep things affordable.

High Resolution Options

HP is feeling the heat from competitors like the MacBook Pro with Retina Display and Chromebook Pixel. The ENVY TouchSmart 14 Ultrabook will offer a 3200x1800 resolution display option. That's a whopping 262 pixels per inch, and impressive by any stretch of an imagination.

Free Cloud Storage

All buyers of ENVY notebooks and desktops get a free 50GB cloud storage account from Box.com; Pavilion notebook and desktop buyers will still get 25GB.

Pricing

The Pavillion 11 TouchSmart, despite its specs, will start at just $399 when it ships on June 26th. The Pavilion 14 starts at $479, the Pavilion 15 starts at $429, and the Pavilion 17 starts at $449. All will ship later this year. The HP ENVY 17 starts at $529 and will hit stores on June 5th; the 15 and TouchSmart 15 start at $529 and drop on the same date. Finally, the HP ENVY TouchSmart 14 Ultrabook will start at $699 - though you won't get the 3200x1800 screen for that price; it starts at 1366x768 and will likewise offer a middle 1600x900 option.

South Australia's first Apple Store draws line hours ahead of opening [update: photos and video]By Mikey Campbell

While Apple's latest retail outlet in Australia isn't scheduled to open for another three hours, customers eager to get into the region's first Apple Store are already queuing up, some having been there for nearly 12 hours.

Pictures from the scene, sent to AppleInsider by reader Jonathan, show about 30 people waiting for the grand opening of Apple's Rundle Place location, the first brick-and-mortar shop the company has set up in South Australia. The first people in line started showing up at 8:30 p.m. last night. Currently, local time in Adelaide is about 7 a.m., well ahead of the scheduled 10 a.m. door opening.

According to Apple's website, the Rundle Place Apple Store will boast a Genius Bar, in-store workshops, One to One service and business-class offerings, as well as free youth programs like Youth Workshops, Field Trips and Apple Camp.

A report Monday noted that Apple's brick-and-mortar outlets netted a record $58 per visitor last quarter, which amounted to an average per-store revenue of $13.1 million.

Update: The Rundle Place Apple Store is now open. Following are pictures minutes after doors opened to over 300 people.

Another difference between Microsoft Stores and Apple Stores. You'll never see this kind of devotion & dedication in any place other than an Apple Store

How come this article doesn't indicate which finger poppin', hip-hopping hipster or high profile 'now' band these people are waiting in line for?? The MicroSoft store that recently opened across the mall from my local Apple Store had Kelly Clarkson to attract overnight line squatters? ? \s

OCZ Announces the Vertex 450 Series Solid State Drives

Vertex 450 SSDOCZ Technology Group announced on Thursday the launch of its Vertex 450 SATA III SSD series. The new solid state drive (SSD) series is designed to bridge the gap between high-performance and mainstream solid-state storage, offering the company's proprietary Indilinx Barefoot 3 M10 series controller and 20nm NAND Flash.

The Vertex 450 series will offer 20nm NAND flash replacing the 25nm-based Vertex 4 previously used. With this new technology the Vertex 450 will boasts bandwidth up to 540MB/s read, 530 MB/s write, and 4K random write performance of up to 90,000 IOPS.

The Barefoot 3 M10 controller will offer high speed sequential transfers for both compressed and uncompressed data file formats offering faster file transfers and boot-ups. Derived on existing technologies that add AES-256 encryption and a power-optimized clock, the BF3 M10 controller will provide the OCZ with a suite of flash management tools that analyze and adapt to increase NAND vulnerabilities as flash cells wear, helping to increase data integrity.

The Vertex 450 SSDS will also feature 7mm alloy housing for compatibility with thin form factors, and the device will be bundled with a 3.5-inch adapter bracket as well as Acronis True Image cloning software with Windows 8 support. The Vertex 540 will be available in 128GB to 512GB capacities with a 3-year warranty.

Blunderbuss - Jack White

by lovekillhannah What more is there to say really? His voice is so unique and incredible, and he's one of the best guitar players ever. He's a true musician in every way and writes great lyrics to go with real rock n roll music. The world needs more real rock n roll like this again.

by John Richardson when everything else is recycled, retuned and poor empty emotionless writing, its great to see an artist that kicks in the door with each track. No matter if he is penning a ballad or destroying you with overtoned raw grinding riffs, Jack White never lets himself or his fans down. Each track stands alone and thats what makes him an overwhelmingly great artist. If you haven't downloaded this album yet, get on it!!

by SeanoLasTres I am a huge Jack White fan. White Stripes, Raconteurs, Dead Weather, what have you. I'm part of the Vault members for Third Man Records.

That said, this is a very unique and new side of Jack. It is not remotely what you would be used to hearing. There are some hints of late White Stripes and some Raconteurs, but for the most part, it's different. I suppose after hearing Sixteen Saltines, I expected there to be some more grit (even though the grit in that song comes across refined instead of raw) and I got excited for it...that's it except for a few snippets (Take Me With You When You Go). The rest of the album is kind of strange sometimes. It's good...just probably not what you were expecting. Missing Pieces and Love Interruption are great songs, but beyond that, I have trouble saying, "Oh yeah, that song is great too." It's great to see him take a new, interesting journey and venture into the realm of new music, but I guess I miss the old Jack too.

At some point you'll ask yourself, "is this really Jack White?" It's almost the exact same feeling when Danger Mouse got a hold of The Black Keys; you kind of said, "What the hell happened?" What you know of Jack White and what you have heard from his previous work has given you a expectation of what is coming in the future. I understand this is him defining himself as a solo artist, but I'm not sure if I'm crazy about it. It's odd. It just doesn't fulfill what you want it to. But I'm also used to hearing different sides of him. The difference between Elephant and Get Behind Me Satan is INSANE, and they're only 2 years apart! And hearing him in a rock band with the Raconteurs (saw them at Lollapalooza in 2006 and they kicked it hard) and on drums in the Dead Weather...point is I know he's capable of a lot and he's wildly talented...but my mouth is still dry from lack of awesome.

Understand this: I was STOKED for this album. You couldn't shut me up about it. I listened to it and found myself saying, "huh?" So I shook it off and listened again and..."huh?" I am listening to it the third time through now, but I just can't see this album growing on me and I am bummed out about it.

Are you ready to Blitz? Come feel the frenzy now!

by Spblat The game constantly asks you to deploy powerups that can't be had except by continuously feeding money into it. It never stops asking for Facebook authorization so that it can advertise to your friends. There are developers who know how to profit from the freemium model without angering players. EA is not among them. Pity, because the game is fun. Deleted.

by Paisleyartmachine I'm sick of fame developers treating me like a tool and trying to extort cash from me at every turn. EA's version of tetris is the worst offender yet. Game is marginal at best, designed entirely around the premise of extracting cash from suckers. I hate this.

by ScottFromNY Thanks, EA, for taking the fun out of Tetris.

Verizon Cloud iPhone backup software launches on Apple's App StoreBy AppleInsider Staff

Verizon this week launched a new iPhone application for its subscribers that gives access to the carrier's cloud-based syncing and backup service.

Verizon
The official Verizon Cloud application is now available as a free download on the App Store. It requires iOS 5.0 or later, and is optimized for the 4-inch display on the iPhone 5.

Customers can sign up for the Verizon Cloud service, which debuted last month, by visiting the carrier's website. The entry-level 500-megabyte plan is free, while 25 gigabytes are available for $2.99 per month, 75 gigabytes for $5.99 per month, or 125 gigabytes for $9.99 per month.

Features of the newly released iOS application, according to Verizon, include:
Keep your phone's content safe and secure in your own private cloud storage
Access your content when you need it, even on the go, on any compatible device, your computer or the web
Sync photos and videos from Verizon Cloud to your device, and then share that synched content with your friends and family
Stream music and access documents stored in Verizon Cloud on your phone
Backup content from your computer's hard drive to your Verizon Cloud using the downloadable computer app. You can then access that content on your mobile devices.Tags:VerizonApp StoreJump to comments (16)Categories:iOS(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Tweet!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); On Topic: VerizonVerizon Cloud iPhone backup software launches on Apple's App StoreVerizon confirms $100 iPhone 5 for featurephone customers [u]ESPN interested in subsidizing mobile data plans to ensure users can stream videoSupply shortages delay Samsung Galaxy S4 launch at Sprint, T-MobileSlowing iPhone growth may be function of smartphone industry, not restricted to AppleToday's' HeadlinesFoxconn may sell own branded accessories after Apple profits dipApple's iPhone sales tactics in Europe under antitrust investigationRelated ArticlesMicrosoft releases Kinectimals game, SkyDrive storage for iOSAmazon launches Cloud Player app on iOS App StoreLegal issues prompt Apple to remove Amazon Cloud music player from App StoreGoogle Drive launches with 5GB of free cloud storageAmazon takes on Apple's Photo Stream with Cloud Drive Photos iOS appPrevious Comments View Alljack mac2013/05/24 12:03pm

I'd question it if it were free, and they've had Backup Assistant for a few years now so I think that they have some good experience with cloud backups.

macologist2013/05/24 01:11pm

How is this different from these: iCloud, Drop Box, and various other Online Backups?

Privacy and Competence are Major Concerns too!

I don't see how Verizon's, or any Cell Carrier's Support for Apple's Products is better than AppleCare!

Walking into US Cell Carrier's Stores is the best Advertising for AppleCare! In most cases in those stores they try harder to sell Android Phones. Why? Cause Apple's Products Just Work, and thus puts the Carrier's Employees Out Of Work, cause their "Support" is not needed. That is what I have observed, so I assume that it's like that in most places!

All Carriers should focus on is Reliable Fast Connection at Lowest Price!

Apple lets these Apps in its stores, and Consumers vote with their Money!

I understand that iCloud Backup is not as Complete as Local USB Backup! So is Verizon saying that they have solved that problem, so that Local USB and iCloud iOS Backups are Identical? If yes, I'd love Apple to offer the same capability!

We'll see what News WWDC 2013 has to offer with the New iOS 7 and Mac OS 9 etc.

I'd love to see Apple offer Renewals of AppleCare after the Initial 3 Years! That way one goes to the Source! Obviously, with the Toll Free Phone Support!

dlux2013/05/24 01:12pm

Sure thing, Verizon, I'll back up my files on your network.

And then discover that I can't retrieve them when needed because it will exceed your bandwidth caps...

This is a good point - VZ already has experience in the area.? I don't see any reason why they'd be less trustworthy than Apple.? While iCloud has been very good overall, it's not like it hasn't had hiccups.? That said, the 15GB iCloud subscription I already pay for is enough for me.

Centipede Hz - Animal Collective

by efil4zagginman this really pumps my nads

by lollytay Those looking for Merriweather Post Pavilion 2.0 should turn away. This album is a new vein in the Animal Collective discography and it's a huge bundle of sounds to unravel. It's daunting at first, but oh so rewarding with each listen.

Centipede Hz, built around the idea of an alien radio transmission, is a journey that, if taken willingly, can transform the listener. Standouts include brash, but oddly melodic opener Moonjock, Deakin's lead vocal debut Wide Eyed, the fantastic Moneky Riches and epic album closer Amanita.

So enjoy this album for what it is. Don't let your expectations or predictions cloud the real point of this album: the music.

by Lara McTyer Was the magnitude quake Stuart Berman had in his Batman underoos. Poor thing didn't think it felt good, bless his heart. The aliens will be displeased. The Deak will make sure of it.

Sun - Cat Power

by dingodoggie5 Amazing. Complex. Brilliant. The production is superb and her voice still resonates deep within. I have been waiting for this album for a good while and the experience of listening to it for the first time was worth the wait. This album is not a departure or something new. It is an evolution. I will be listening to this album on repeat for a long, long time.

by MateoOfSanDiego Sun is the most consistently impressive Cat Power album to date. Those who own and have often played any of Marshall's previous albums know that, while there are often a handful of great songs contained, there are almost just as many misses... I'm looking at you Myra Lee and What Would the Community Think. Even her critically acclaimed The Greatest had its share of uninspired doozies, although its stronger tracks ultimately overshadowed and outshone the lesser examples. It's companion album, the similar-sounding Jukebox, frightened some diehard fans into believing Cat Power's sound had regressed into nostalgia, and at the time was an ominous cloud looming over the release of Sun, pun intended. What a delightful turn of events, then, to find that this album manages to, um, "eclipse" even her best efforts (probably You Are Free, arguably Moon Pix) in terms of consistent output of one great track after another. Yes, it does sound different than her other, "grittier" records, but if you like them so much go and listen to them... we have to move on, people. Sun ensures Marshall's overall scope, stylistically offering more to choose from than with earlier efforts. Longtime Cat Power enthusiasts will love "Always On My Own" and "Human Being" as more refined examples of her eldest LPs; while progressive 'Powers will jump for joy on thumping, potentially dancey cuts like "3, 6, 9", "Cherokee" and "Silent Machine." Possibly the most emotionally effective marriage of Marshall's past and present, however, doesn't come until late in the album, a tactic she (wisely) has previously employed with tracks like "Colors & the Kids" and "Maybe Not" (Moon Pix, You Are Free, respectively) of which Sun's "Nothin But Time" tearfully earns its rightful place alongside. Still, it'd be nice to hear a version without Iggy Pop's iconically distracting vocals... Sorry. Lyrically there's a more political edge to some of the songs, particularly the single "Ruin" and "Peace & Love", the latter of which could serve as an Occupy Wall Street mantra, while the former highlights economic disparities gathered from Marshall's own observations abroad. Then there's some relationship stuff, which is apparently about her break-up with Giovanni Ribisi, but it's actually not offensive insofar as its not noticeably specific to him. There is a weird, almost Ayn Rand-ian moment in the chorus of "Real Life" - something about "Nothing's wrong / with helping the strong" - but this is followed immediately after by the humanitarianism of "Human Being" and the album's more politically progressive themes overall, so... whatever. Like other great artists before her, there are some concepts covered in Sun that Marshall has previously touched upon, but as with the album's sound itself, these ideas are more realized and tangible here than ever before. Only one track, the most recent of Marshall's "I love new York" jingles, "Manhattan", feels somewhat out of place, if not just a little trite in an album that covers weightier ground. Maybe it's levity, but it feels more like a bonus track than the actual two "bonus tracks" offered in iTunes' "Bonus Track Version" - both of which are pretty great and worth the fraction of cost. Truly the only concern among longtime Cat Power fans must be that, at one's artistic peak, it's all down hill from here... But, then again, after her other great records, Sun was never supposed to be this good.

by freelancegargoyle I was hoping she'd keep to that raw kind of simple sound for this album, but she didn't. There's a lot of noise and not much clarity. Some of the tracks are actually alright but in general Sun lacks rhythmic depth in comparison to her previous albums.

New service delivers passes for Apple's Passbook via text messageBy Kevin Bostic

Users of Apple's Passbook feature for iOS have a new option for getting tickets, coupons, and more delivered to their devices, as Skycore has launched support for cross-carrier delivery of Passbook passes by MMS.

yapyap
Pass providers can plug into Skycore's SaaS platform and APIs, allowing for secure transmission of passes to a user's messaging inbox. Those passes can then be transferred to the user's Passbook app. Skycore also allows for mobile-optimized email and mobile landing pages, but the company believes the MMS feature gets content to users faster and more reliably.

The service also allows pass providers to monitor MMS delivery receipts and confirmed installs, which can be helpful in determining the success of a campaign.

Skycore can currently deliver MMS passes to U.S.-based AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon customers. The service is built to work with Apple's Passbook, but if a customer is on an Android phone, Skycore's MMS device detection can send a message presenting alternative storage options, such as PassWallet for Android.

Launched as a feature within iOS 6, Apple's Passbook feature has seen considerable adoption by a range of service providers. Discover uses the feature to deliver cardholder rewards, American Airlines allows more than a million users to store boarding passes with it, and a number of Major League Baseball stadiums allow users to store tickets in the app.

Other smaller pass providers have used the feature to drive coupon campaigns and drum up new business. Filings from last year indicate that Apple may be looking to integrate Passbook with near-field communications technology in the near future. So far nothing to see, just an API. Seems like a cool way to go -- will be interesting to see who might adopt it.

This only exists because Passbook as it currently stands is a hot mess of confusion that people *want* to use but mostly can't figure out *how* to use, or don't have the time and energy to devote to the task once they know.

It definitely isn't widely understood but I every day at Starbucks. I'm not sure it's a Starbucks or Apple server change but after a couple months of using it the updates for the balance on my card started coming within 60 seconds. Since I don't get a receipt I can easily just look at the phone to see the updated balance.

The ability to deliver passes by SMS has been in Passbook from start. ?Other vendors (including us) deliver passes by SMS as a routine thing.

Why is this news?

Why is this news?

?

The press release talks about MMS, not SMS.

?

MMS is a completely different user experience with entirely different benefits to issuers.
