Blip: Google exploring making mystery barges spaces to check out new tech

Google says it's exploring making mystery barges spaces to check out new tech Looks like a fun place... (credit: sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com)

Alright, Sherlocks, put your pipes away.

Google is out with a statement on what the hell is up with the mystery barge (actually, barges) the purpose of which everyone's gone gaga over trying to figure out.

"Google Barge ... A floating data center? A wild party boat? A barge housing the last remaining dinosaur? Sadly, none of the above. Although it's still early days and things might change, we're exploring using the barge as an interactive space where people can learn about new technology," a Google spokesperson told TechCrunch.

So while the party deck is seemingly out, it looks like people will still get the chance to play with Google Glass (now in its second edition) and other Google gizmos on these floating structures.

Cast yourself over to more blips.

Google Earth helps sheriff's department find stolen car [w/video]

Man finds a stolen vehicle after seeing satellite images of it while surveying his property using Google Earth.

A stolen-vehicle case opened back in March was recently solved with the help of a property owner using Google Earth, a virtual globe and mapping service similar to Google Maps, ABC News reports. The man, who remains anonymous, found the stolen GMC Yukon while he was surveying his property in George County, Mississippi, using the map service and, judging by the top-down satellite image, thought he found a "shooting house" on his hunting grounds.

When he drove out to the suspicious structure, he realized it actually was a sport utility vehicle wedged in thick brush about 70 yards from the nearest road, so he called the police.

Law enforcement officers had arrested a female suspect in the case earlier based on eyewitness accounts, but didn't prosecute her because the stolen SUV hadn't been found. Ben Brown, a lieutenant detective with the George County Sheriff's Department, says that he ran the plates and confirmed the SUV was the stolen vehicle the department had been looking for.

"Now that we have the truck, we can pursue the prosecution," Brown says.

Google reportedly mulling $1B Waze bid, could spark bidding war with FacebookBy AppleInsider Staff

According to Bloomberg sources, Google is looking to throw in a $1 billion bid for Waze, possibly portending a bidding war between the search giant and Facebook, which is also rumored to be eyeing an acquisition of the social mapping service.

People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Waze is managing "expressions of interest" from multiple parties, and is targeting a selling price of at least $1 billion. Alternatively, the firm may seek venture capital financing in order to stay independent.

Waze
A report earlier in May claimed Facebook was in talks to pick up Waze, with the purchase positioning the social network to enter an already cramped market led by Google Maps. Facebook's bid was also said to be around $1 billion.

The sources went on to say that Google only approached Waze after chatter of the Facebook bid went public, suggesting the tech monolith is looking to block Facebook from entering the mapping game.

The publication notes that a deal is far from being reached, and talks may fall apart as Waze's user base is substantial enough to raise funding privately. As of April, Waze had over 40 million people using its service.

In January, Apple too was rumored to be interested in purchasing the startup to bolster its iOS Maps app, but the claims turned out to be false. Sources on Thursday confirmed the Cupertino, Calif., company is not currently part of the talks.

As for Waze's existing investors, the company managed to successfully raise $30 million in a 2011 funding round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Horizons Ventures Hong Kong. Microsoft is also said to be an investor, as is Magma Venture Partners, Vertex Venture Capital and BlueRun Ventures.

The iOS app is free to download from the App Store, and features TomTom-like functionality like automatic reporting of traffic data. Social aspects include community-generated real-time routing, live maps and an accident reporting system, among others standard navigation features.Tags:GoogleFacebookMapsWazeJump to comments (39)Categories:General(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Tweet!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); On Topic: GeneralFoxconn may sell own branded accessories after Apple profits dipReview: Scosche enters car radio fray with iOS connected controlFREQWorking Apple I fetches $671,400 in German auctionGoogle's Motorola issues second appeal of dismissed ITC case against AppleSouth Australia's first Apple Store draws line hours ahead of opening [update: photos and video]Today's' HeadlinesFoxconn may sell own branded accessories after Apple profits dipApple's iPhone sales tactics in Europe under antitrust investigationRelated ArticlesFacebook reportedly in talks to buy social mapping service WazeApple may acquire crowd-sourced traffic and navigation service WazeApple-Waze social mapping acquisition 'not happening'Apple and Google reportedly partners in $500M bid for Kodak patentsApple Maps directions beat Google Maps, Waze in pundit's head-to-head testPrevious Comments View Allhill602013/05/23 08:57pm

Why would they need to buy another mapping company?

I was thinking similar.? Not that Google maps was perfect, but what was the point of them buying something else?

heavy rain in NYC ?today - roads and flooding everywhere, did a control at 5:56pm ET (so sick of the google PR spin map spin machine and sad pathetic "journalists"?) and saved to photos. Once again, since the beginning, I used Apple Maps to get me home. Clean & simple. Tufte would be proud.

Typical of Google &/or Facebook to spend a billion for something worth orders of magnitude less.

Remember Motorola?

Agree. What would Waze have that they (1) want and (2) are willing to pay that much to get? They would have to know Apple isn't interested at that price point and I can't imagine it would be just to keep it out of Facebook's hands? Are they really a threat? What even would Facebook do with them?

Simple Google wants to keep it out of the hands of anyone else as it could rival their own offerings. Purely defensive.

Google, Don't make me have to uninstall Waze!

Does anyone else think the "but, but, but" thing needs to stop. ?It seems to come up at least once in every thread, sometimes more. ?It's overplayed so please stop.

I think Apple needs this, or foursquare.
Buying foursquare would be amazing.

jsmythe002013/05/23 10:20pm

side bar: what i think apple needs to do is buy a carrier. or bandwidth and have mobile services thats caters specifically to ios

How to Export Your RSS Feeds from Google Reader

Whether you do email marketing, publish an RSS feed, or both, you will inevitably have customers that choose to unsubscribe from your communications. However, you may be able to limit the number of customers who do so. According to a recent report by ExactTarget, there are a variety of reasons why a person may unsubscribe. RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a new way to broadcast corporate news and structured information. RSS offers a quick, easy corporate communication channel. The RSS contents are published as a feed and the feed's content keep customers, partners and journalists abreast of corporate news and information. The RSS feeds are read using a tool referred to as a news aggregator, or an RSS reader. The aggregator periodically checks to see if the RSS feed has been updated. As the feed is updated, new information will automatically appear in the RSS reader.

While RSS was at one point only considered to be a means to deliver news headlines, RSS has quickly become a powerful medium to disseminate all kinds of information. As traditional marketers are attempting to rein in content delivery, measuring e-mail open rates, click-throughs and conversions, Internet users are fighting to gain control over the content they receive. Savvy marketers and business owners are using RSS as a way to improve corporate communication and increase their external exposure and brand appeal.

Google Readers split from its loyal user base has been a tad messy. It is not you, it is us, Google implored. We are living in a new kind of computing environment, was their attempt at letting users down gently.
However, for some die-hard fans it was all too much and they answered the only way they knew how – a selection of moderately funny internet memes and online petitions.

For the uninitiated, the search giant is set to shut down its RSS tool on July 1st; a service used daily by millions to gather together content from blogs, newswires and almost countless sites around the web.

Just as with any major tech event, it spurred a raft of reactions on what is currently our best real-time conversation broadcasting network, Twitter. Reactions ranged from outrage to sadness to smugness — the latter epitomized by the camp who say that RSS was already a confusing mess that needed to be shot down completely and besides, it had been replaced by Twitter itself anyway.

Well, no. RSS matters.

Here is what is new in the latest version of Feedly:

The developers have fixed a login bug that forced users to login to the service regularly. According to Feedly, this should not happen anymore even if the servers are taxed to the limit.
The title only view mode - my preferred mode of viewing RSS updates - has been improved. It now stretches across the whole width of the browser window automatically. While that is not entirely true, as you can see from the screenshot above, it is still an improvement. The title only view has also received more sharing options (while hovering over an article).
Faster load times for the service. The developers have optimized the client code so that you should experience better performance while using the service.
Support for folders that include  [] brackets.
Support for Hebrew and Farsi.
Improved feed search to find feeds by URL and add them to your list of subscribed feeds.
Feedly seems dedicated to improve the service and while many users are waiting for a web-based version of it, the improvements certainly are welcome additions to the service as well.

Best of all, it does this in real-time, so you don't have to wait hours for stories to process.

When Google announced Reader, their RSS service, was being shuttered… news junkies everywhere revolted. Reader was the easiest, simplest, cleanest RSS feed available. Everyone wondered why it was being shut down, and a groundswell of support was initiated to bring it back.

There has been no sign of Google reversing their spring cleaning initiative, but it is really hard to believe they would simply abandon RSS altogether.

Googles spring cleaning has begun, and the company has already axed one of the most loved services, even though the user rate has been declining over the years. Google Reader, one of the biggest RSS feeds, has got its death date, even with people making petitions for Google Reader to stay.

More on Google Reader

Whether you do email marketing, publish an RSS feed, or both, you will inevitably have customers that choose to unsubscribe from your communications. However, you may be able to limit the number of customers who do so. According to a recent report by ExactTarget, there are a variety of reasons why a person may unsubscribe. By understanding why customers unsubscribe from various communications, marketers can learn which marketing mistakes to avoid and keep their subscribers.

Why Do People Unsubscribe?

How to Use Pinterest for BeginnersYou have likely heard people obsess about Pinterest so you are curious about what it is and how to use it.

Pinterest is a highly visual virtual pinboard site that lets you pin or collect images from the Web. You create boards to help you categorize your images and add descriptions to remind you why you bookmarked them in the first place.

RSS For Business

Academia has embraced RSS as a means to educate, but scrutinizing how educational institutions are using RSS feeds in their daily routines show RSS is utilized can vary across different industries.

How Terror Can Breed Through Social MediaThe days of would-be terrorists needing to travel to far-off camps to make contacts and learn how to build bombs is rapidly receding. Social media forums like Twitter and Facebook provide a ready made Rolodex of sources -- dig further online, mine those contacts further, gain admission to private chat forums and eventually you will find instructions for bomb making.

I looked for a better way to keep on top of searching for what I was looking for and found that you can turn an ebay search into an RSS feed.   Load it into your favorite RSS reader or website and it will give you all the recent hits on your search.

Google brings Business Photos to India

Summary: The program allows customers to walk through, explore, and take a closer look at a business premise, giving Indian businesses the ability to provide virtual tours inside the offices through interactive 360-degree imagery.

Google has officially launched its Business Photos initiative in India, allowing consumers to see inside a company's premise without actually stepping inside the location. The program allows local businesses to provide Google users a virtual tour inside the business through interactive 360-degree imagery. This imagery can be viewed on Google Search, Google Maps, and Google+ Local Pages.

The program is currently available in more than eight countries globally including United States, Australia, New Zealand, France, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Google Business Photos allows customers to walk through, explore, and take a closer look at a business premise. Also, businesses can embed these photos on their Web sites and social media channels using an embedded code from Google Maps.

Commenting on the value for business owners, Shailesh Nalawadi, Google's product manager of Geo, said: "For the businesses, this provides an opportunity to visually present their product and services. For example, before visiting a store to purchase an electronic device, consumers can use business photos to evaluate and view the selections offered by various retailers."

Hard Rock Cafe in an upscale pub in Pune, India's seventh largest metropolis, has its imagery on Google Maps as part of the pilot program. A customer can check out the décor, seating, and ambience before planning an evening out at the pub.

hard-rock-cafeHard Rock Cafe in Pune, India, on Google Maps

To get Google Business Photos, business owners can hire one of Google's certified Trusted Agency Photographers including Indiacom, Jindal RH Interactive, Carbon Tree, and Vox360, to capture the interiors of their premises and displays on the storefront, like business hours, rating details, credit cards accepted, and posted menus. Trusted Agency photographers are independent contractors who have been trained and certified by Google to produce high quality panoramic images.

As a business owner, though, one can also upload own photographs to Google+ Local.

Busienss Photos can help customers get a better sense of what a business has to offer and what sets it apart from others.

Google to buy $39m Provo fiber service for $1

Summary: If the deal between Provo and Google doesn't work out, the tech giant can sell the network back for a dollar.

Recently, the latest destination for Google Fiber was confirmed to be Provo, Utah, but rather than building the system from scratch, the tech giant would buy out the city's own network.

iProvo will be bought out by Google pending a vote by the Provo City Council on April 23, but the financial details were not disclosed at the time of the original report. However, according to the Associated Press, Google will buy the existing network -- which cost $39 million to build -- for only $1.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based firm is taking an unusual step in its roadmap by buying an existing fiber-optic network, but it's not difficult to see why. Under the terms of the deal, Google will complete the network's construction and upgrade the system so it offers Provo residents gigabit connections, which are touted to be 100 times faster than current broadband speeds. The city will have to pay remaining loans resultant of the $39 million build, but if Google decides the merger isn't working out, the firm has a get-out clause -- it can sell the network back to the city for the same symbolic dollar.

Provo is approximately 45 miles south of Salt Lake City, and has a population of 115,000 residents. If the deal is voted in, then the city will be the third extension of Google Fiber's city roadmap. At the moment, according to the publication, Provo residents have been paying a little over $5 a month for their Internet, television and phone services. However, if residents agree to sign up to a $30 connection fee, then they will receive basic Internet services at no charge.

Google has five years to complete Provo's fiber network. In a blog post Wednesday, Google Fiber general manager Kevin Lo explained why Provo is of interest to the firm:

"Utah is already home to hundreds of tech companies and startups, and many of them are based in Provo. In fact, the Provo area ranks second in the nation in patent growth, and is consistently ranked as one of the top places to live and do business in the U.S."

The high-speed Internet service will join fiber networks expanding across the U.S. Last month, Google announced that residents in Olathe, Kansas, would join those waiting in Westwood, Westwood Hills and Mission Woods, Kan. that would have access to the network in the near future, although "a lot of planning and engineering work" is required first.

Google Fiber is currently available in Kansas City, KS, and Kansas City, MO, with Austin, Texas marked as the next city for the service to launch.

Twitter goes Google with social keyword targeting for advertisers

Twitter is now offering a Google-like keyword targeting service for advertisers, which will push Promoted Tweets into a user's timeline based on a selection of target words.

The new service makes content "a first-class citizen" in Twitter's Promoted Tweet advertising scheme, which previously only used content as one factor that shaped the "interest graph", the company said.

Twitter announced interest graph in 2010 as a key plank of its future offerings. The dynamic real-time graph is based on 'introductions' between people, content, URLs, organisations, trends, companies, lists, products and services.

Twitter claims the new keyword-targeting service will offer higher engagement because advertisers can have their Promoted Tweets injected into a target's timeline at the right moment and in the right context.

"For example: let's say a user tweets about enjoying the latest album from their favorite band, and it so happens that band is due to play a concert at a local venue. That venue could now run a geotargeted campaign using keywords for that band with a tweet containing a link to buy the tickets. That way, the user who tweeted about the new album may soon see that Promoted Tweet in their timeline letting them know tickets are for sale in their area."

Advertisers can refine their keyword targeting through elements including geographic location, device, and gender.

Twitter ran a trial of the service with several companies, including Microsoft Japan to promote the Surface tablet, and says it found users were more likely to engage with a Promoted Tweet using keyword targeting in timeline than other forms of targeting — for example, just targeting by device type.

The keyword service will be available as part of Twitter's recently revamped Ads UI and its Ads API, announced in February.

India fastest growing SMB market for Google AdWords

Small and midsize businesses (SMBs) in India are using the Internet as a medium to generate more qualified leads and sales, and Google AdWords claims to deliver that value to businesses with their search engine advertising platform.

Google AdWords delivers relevant advertisements when someone is looking for a product or service on Google Search--making the ad more useful and relevant. The business only pays when someone clicks on the ad.

"Facebook on the other hand is a display advertising solution and serves a different kind of marketing need," asserted Sandeep Menon, head of marketing at Google India.

According to Menon, Google has been witnessing triple digit growth in terms of advertising revenues from SMBs in India. In the last two years, Google India has raced ahead to become the fastest growing SMB market for Google globally.

"With an estimated 47 million SMEs (small and midsize enterprises) in the country--India is a strategic market for Google. We have made significant investments in localizing our market outreach to tap the various clusters of SMEs. In the last year alone, we have significantly ramped up the efforts to maximize our reach and educate the Indian SME on the benefits of online advertising."

Google India has been ramping up its efforts to educate SMEs about the power of digital advertising and evangelize the Google AdWords platform.

It has now 10 Premier SME Partners in India and is aiming to have a sales workforce of over 10,000 people through this program in next year. The Google Engage program now has over 3,000 partners spread across 165 cities in India. Also, Google India has set up dedicated call centers who provide local language support in six Indian languages to SMEs who want to get online and start their campaigns.

The advertising potential of Indian SMBs has interested Google for quite a while.

In the past, Google has taken steps to help SMBs in India to gain from the digital economy by helping them establish online presence for free through their "India Get Your Business Online" campaign. In the last year and a half, they've developed and published free websites for over 175,000 SMBs from over 8,000 Indian cities.

Obviously, this wasn't a CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) exercise but an organized program to bring physical or offline businesses to Web adding them to the pool of potential digital advertisers.

Kathana Jewelers, a hybrid store making jewelry buying a visually appealing and hassle free experience for their consumers, started using AdWords with a modest budget of INR 20,000 (US$370) per month in 2010 and now have raised it to over INR 100,000. The revenue scaled phenomenally and today, AdWords accounts for 100 percent of their advertising budget.

"AdWords worked great for our jewelry store and it was the best strategy that we invested in," said Aditya Gupta, director of marketing at Kathana Jewelers.

While Google AdWords face stiff competition from Facebook Marketing solutions for the digital budgets in Indian SMBs, the huge market would keep the two companies, and other players, satiated. For businesses, digital advertising is helping them to effectively gain customer base and impact the top line with enhanced revenues in the long run.
