Cisco UCS Central software manages multiple, globally distributed Cisco UCS domains with thousands of servers from a single pane. It can simplify global policy compliance. Using SingleConnect Technology, Cisco UCS provides unified, embedded management of all software and hardware components with the Cisco UCS Manager. Every instance of Cisco UCS Manager and all of the components managed by it form a domain. Cisco UCS Central integrates with Cisco UCS Manager, and utilizes it to provide global configuration capabilities for pools, policies, and firmware.

Cisco UCS Central aggregates inventory and fault information across multiple Cisco UCS domains to facilitate service assurance for the Cisco UCS infrastructure. Like Cisco UCS Manager, it exposes an XML API for integration with customer and partner management solutions.

Cisco UCS Central software does not replace Cisco UCS Manager, which is the basic engine for server management in individual Cisco UCS domains. Unlike Cisco UCS Manager, which is embedded in the Fabric Interconnects, Cisco UCS Central is a virtual machine image that can be run on a hypervisor to provide powerful compute infrastructure management.

Cisco UCS Central can provide global definition capabilities for policies and resource pools which can be flexibly allocated across distributed data centers. This enables administrators to follow a "define once, deploy many times" workflow for their compute infrastructure.

Industry shifts are redefining IT at all levels. On-premise IT consumption models are shifting to cloud-based services. IT as a service (IaaS) is supplanted by applications as a service. Separate development and operations are moving toward integrated development and operations (DevOps). Box-centric management models are migrating to application-centric management.

Business agility requires application agility, so IT teams need to provision applications in hours instead of months. Resources need to scale up (or down) in minutes, not hours.

Traditional approaches take a siloed operational view, with no common operational model between the application, network, security, and cloud teams. A common operational model delivers application agility, simplified operations, assured performance, and scale.

Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) is a holistic architecture with centralized automation and policy-driven application profiles. ACI delivers software flexibility with the scalability of hardware performance.

Cisco ACI consists of:

Key characteristics of ACI include:

Simplified automation by an application-driven policy modelCentralized visibility with real-time, application health monitoringOpen software flexibility for DevOps teams and ecosystem partner integrationScalable performance and multi-tenancy in hardwareThe future of networking with ACI is about providing a network that is deployed, monitored, and managed in a fashion that supports DevOps and rapid application change. ACI does so through the reduction of complexity and a common policy framework that can automate provisioning and managing of resources.

ACI is an innovative, highly secure architecture based upon a number of different elements, outlined below.

Combine hardware, software, and ASIC innovations into an integrated systems approach to take advantage of standard Ethernet and IP protocols.

The extensible, object-oriented OS offers comprehensive programmability.

Application-level health scores, counters, and policies for both physical and virtual applications simplify troubleshooting and provide visibility.

A common management framework for network, application, security, and virtualization teams makes IT more agile.

ACI automates all fabric management tasks, including image management, configuration, and stitching of other networking infrastructure services such as firewalls and load balancers.

Facilitate provisioning of applications while promoting performance and visibility correlation between logical and physical networks.

Normalize physical and virtual server transport between different hypervisors and bare metal servers to ease migration from virtual to physical, or virtual to virtual.

Advance proper isolation and SLAs for different tenants while providing a consistent security policy across physical and virtual applications.

Data center teams define security and networking policies using a common policy language abstraction. This helps security teams to provide robust policy definitions independent of the network topology.

ACI supports the Cisco Open Network Environment (ONE) strategy, embracing open APIs, open source, and open standards. This provides the broadest choice in data center management and infrastructure.

A well-documented set of northbound and southbound APIs, available through the Cisco Developer Network, support rapid system integration and flexibility for:

Layer 4-7 servicesVirtual network infrastructureMonitoringManagementOrchestration services

Take advantage of existing IT teams' skillsets and infrastructure to lower overall TCO.

Innovative 40 Gb bi-directional optics allow for the reuse of current 10 Gb cabling to reduce costly fiber upgrades.

Customers can run Cisco Nexus 9000 switches in a standalone deployment or migrate to full ACI fabric mode with a software upgrade. This approach, combined with open interfaces to support existing infrastructure, provides investment protection across the entire portfolio.

ACI can enable agile deployment of applications across enterprises and service provider organizations. Its fabric foundation is built for telemetry, efficiency, scale, and application awareness, leading to lower TCO. The next-generation data center will be built upon ACI principles that are designed for current and future applications.

Simplified Hybrid Cloud Integration

Nearly 50 percent of enterprise organizations will implement hybrid clouds within the next three years, according to Forrester Research. With hybrid clouds, organizations can run mission-critical applications in their own data centers, while offloading peak loads to cloud providers. This optimizes both capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating expenses (OpEx), while better aligning IT costs with business revenue and activity.

A hybrid cloud approach consists of simplified transparent integration between an on-premises enterprise data center with a public cloud service provider. This integration includes:

Highly secure Layer 2 networking connectivity between the enterprise data center and the public cloudThe deployment of security and application services in the public cloudManagement features for a hybrid cloud environment, including support for virtual machine (VM) mobility and lifecycle management.

To address these requirements, Cisco has developed the Cisco Nexus 1000V InterCloud architecture, which connects Cisco virtual data center environments to public cloud providers. The primary features follow.

The first component is the virtual switch that provides highly secure Layer 2 connectivity between the enterprise data center and the public cloud. This Layer 2 network connectivity allows workload mobility across locations while retaining the same IP address. It also provides local switching for the workloads in the cloud.

No matter how remote the public cloud is, this Layer 2 domain overlay allows full workload mobility between servers in each location. Peak capacity and new virtual machines can be bursted to the cloud as needed, on demand.

This Cisco Nexus 1000V-based overlay connection includes vPath for routing traffic to virtual security nodes and application services in the public cloud. These virtual service nodes are deployed as VMs and can run on virtually any cloud infrastructure, while mirroring the sophisticated policy enforcement requirements in the enterprise data center.

The Cisco Nexus 1000V InterCloud framework supports the existing Cisco Nexus 1000V virtual services. These include the Cisco ASA1000V Cloud Firewall, the Cisco Virtual Security Gateway for Nexus 1000V Switch, Cisco Virtual Wide Area Application Services (vWAAS) for WAN optimization, and virtual Network Analysis Module products.

Management of the integrated hybrid cloud environment is handled by the newest 3.0 release of Cisco Prime Network Services Controller, or Cisco Prime Network Services Controller InterCloud provides a single pane of management across enterprise data centers and public clouds. It shows the complete VM inventory in the enterprise data center and facilitates VM migration to a public cloud while retaining Layer 2 connectivity with the other enterprise workloads.

Increase Storage Bandwidth

The Cisco ® MDS 9710 Multilayer Director (Figure 1) is a director-class SAN switch designed for deployment in large-scale storage networks to enable enterprise clouds and business transformation. Layering a comprehensive set of intelligent features onto a high-performance, protocol-independent switch fabric, the Cisco MDS 9710 addresses the stringent requirements of large virtualized data center storage environments: uncompromising high availability, security, scalability, ease of management, and transparent integration of new technologies for extremely flexible data center SAN solutions. Sharing the same operating system and management interface with other Cisco data center switches, the Cisco MDS 9710 enables seamless deployment of unified fabrics with high-performance Fibre Channel, IBM Fibre Connectivity (FICON), and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) connectivity to achieve low total cost of ownership (TCO).  The Cisco MDS 9710 offers the following main features: With the exponential growth of data in today's business environment, organizations need to deploy large-scale SANs in the most efficient and cost-effective ways. To meet scalability requirements while managing TCO, the Cisco MDS 9710 offers industry-leading port densities of up to 384 16-Gbps Fibre Channel ports per chassis, multihop FCoE, 1.5-Tbps front-panel Fibre Channel performance per slot, up to 24-Tbps front-panel Fibre Channel line rate nonblocking system-level switching, unparalleled functionality with intelligent fabric services, VSANs for consolidating individual physical SAN islands while maintaining logical boundaries, and IVR for sharing resources across VSANs. These capabilities enable the consolidation of an organization's data assets into fewer, larger, and more manageable SANs, thus reducing the hardware footprint and associated capital and operational expenses. For unified fabric deployments that have converged LAN and SAN using lossless Ethernet, the Cisco MDS 9710 provides multihop FCoE capability to protect the organizations investment in existing storage infrastructure with any to-any connectivity across multiple protocols. The Cisco MDS 9710 is designed from the beginning for high availability. In addition to meeting the basic requirements of nondisruptive software upgrades and redundancy of all critical hardware components, the Cisco MDS 9710 software architecture offers outstanding availability. The Cisco MDS 9700 Series Supervisor Modules automatically restart failed processes, making the Cisco MDS 9710 exceptionally robust. In the rare event that a supervisor module is reset, complete synchronization between the active and standby supervisor modules helps ensure stateful failover with no disruption of traffic. The Cisco MDS 9710 provides the industry's first redundency on all major hardware components, as detailed in Table 1. High availability is implemented at the fabric level using robust and high-performance Inter-Switch Links (ISLs). The PortChannel capability allows users to aggregate up to 16 physical links into one logical bundle. The bundle can consist of any speed-matched ports in the chassis, helping ensure that the bundle can remain active in the event of a port, application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), or module failure. ISLs in a PortChannel can have significantly different lengths. This capability is valuable in campus and metropolitan area network (MAN) environments, because logical links can now be spread over multiple physical paths, helping ensure uninterrupted connectivity even if one of the physical paths is disrupted. The Cisco MDS 9710 provides outstanding high availability, helping ensure that solutions exceed the 99.999 percent uptime requirements of today's most demanding environments. Enterprise clouds provide organizations with elastic computing and network capabilities, enabling IT to scale resources up or down as needed in a quick and cost-efficient manner. Cisco MDS 9710 provides the industry-leading scalability and pay-as-you-grow flexibility to meet the scalability needs of enterprise clouds, multihop FCoE required to provision storage in a multiprotocol unified fabric, robust security required for multitenancy cloud applications, predictable high performance required to meet stringent service-level agreements (SLAs), resilient connectivity required for always-on cloud infrastructure, and advanced traffic management capabilities such as QoS to quickly and cost-efficiently allocate elastic network capabilities to cloud applications. Furthermore, Cisco DCNM provides resource monitoring and capacity planning on a per-virtual machine basis, enabling efficient, consolidated enterprise cloud deployments, federation of up to 10 Cisco DCNM servers for ease of management of large-scale clouds, and resource use information through Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S)-based developer APIs to deliver IT as a service. Advanced traffic management capabilities integrated into the Cisco MDS 9710 simplify deployment and optimization of large-scale fabrics: To meet the needs of all users, the Cisco MDS 9710 provides three principal modes of management: the Cisco MDS 9000 Family CLI, Cisco Prime DCNM, and integration with third-party storage management tools. The Cisco MDS 9710 presents the user with a consistent, logical CLI. Adhering to the syntax of the widely known Cisco IOS ® Software CLI, the Cisco MDS 9000 Family CLI is easy to learn and delivers broad management capabilities. The Cisco MDS 9000 Family CLI is an extremely efficient and direct interface designed to provide optimal capabilities to administrators in enterprise environments. Using the CLI, customers can enable debugging modes for each switch feature and view a real-time updated activity log of control protocol exchanges. Each log entry is time-stamped and listed in chronological order. Cisco Prime Data Center Network Manager (DCNM) is the network's industry's first converged SAN and LAN management solution. Cisco DCNM can manage all Cisco NX-OS devices, including the Cisco MDS 9000 Family and Cisco Nexus ® Family products. The intuitive GUI simplifies day-to-day operations of Cisco unified fabrics in today's highly virtualized data center environments. The main functions that Cisco DCNM supports include: The solution is designed to scale to large enterprise deployments through scale-out server architecture with automated failover capability. These capabilities provide a resilient management system that centralizes infrastructure and path monitoring across geographically dispersed data centers. The Cisco DCNM base management function is available at no charge, and advanced features are unlocked with a license. The Cisco DCNM application can be installed on Linux and Microsoft Windows operating systems and supports both PostgreSQL and Oracle databases. Addressing the need for fool-proof security in storage networks, the Cisco MDS 9710 offers an extensive security framework to protect the highly sensitive data crossing today's enterprise networks. The Cisco MDS 9710 employs intelligent packet inspection at the port level, including the application of ACLs for hardware enforcement of zones, VSANs, and advanced port-security features. VSANs are used to achieve greater security and stability by providing complete isolation of devices that are connected to the same physical SAN. IVR enables controlled sharing of resources between VSANs. In addition, FC-SP 1 provides switch-to-switch and host-to-switch Diffie-Hellman Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (DH-CHAP) authentication supporting RADIUS or TACACS+, to help ensure that only authorized devices access protected storage networks. Cisco TrustSec ® 1 Fibre Channel link encryption, available in the Cisco MDS 9700 Series 16-Gbps modules, allows you to transparently encrypt ISLs at up to line-rate speeds, providing an additional layer of protection for traffic within and between data centers. Management of large-scale storage networks requires proactive diagnostics, tools to verify connectivity and route latency, and mechanisms for capturing and analyzing traffic. The Cisco MDS 9710 integrates advanced analysis and debuggin tools. The power-on self test (POST) and online diagnostics provide proactive health monitoring. The Cisco MDS 9710 provides the integrated functions required to implement diagnostic capabilities such as Fibre Channel traceroute for identifying the exact path and timing of flows and Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) and Remote SPAN (RSPAN) to intelligently capture network traffic. After traffic has been captured, it can then be analyzed with the Cisco Fabric Analyzer, an embedded Fibre Channel analyzer. Comprehensive port-based and flow-based statistics enable sophisticated performance analysis and SLA accounting. With the Cisco MDS 9710, Cisco delivers a comprehensive tool set for troubleshooting and analysis of storage networks. FCoE allows an evolutionary approach to network and I/O convergence by preserving all Fibre Channel constructs, maintaining the latency, security, and traffic management attributes of Fibre Channel and preserving investments in Fibre Channel tools, training, and SANs. Sharing the same operating system and management plane as the Cisco Nexus switches, the Cisco MDS 9710 provides seamless coexistence in a unified fabric with any-to-any connectivity for Fibre Channel and FCoE. The Cisco MDS 9710 is mainframe ready, with full support for IBM System z FICON and Linux environments. The Cisco MDS 9710 supports transport of the FICON protocol in both cascaded and noncascaded fabrics, as well as an intermix of FICON and open systems Fibre Channel Protocol traffic on the same switch. Cisco Control Unit Port (CUP) support enables in-band management of Cisco MDS 9000 Family switches from mainframe management applications. The Cisco MDS 9710 supports a fabric-binding feature that helps ensure that ISLs are enabled only between specified switches in the fabric-binding configuration. Small Review of RHCE Rapid course, and what's next after RHCE?

Hi,

I recently attended the RHCE Rapid Course. I have a small review for everyone here. First like to let everyone know, I have 10+ years in writing c/c++ professionally. The biggest leap I made, if i treated RHEL like a programming environment, everything clicks.

1) Redhat's course is top shelf. Is it worth the money? If you have it, yes.

2) The redhat instructor is A+++. The instructor explained things very elegantly. He is from Canada, but I can't seem to recall his name.

3) Its very fast paced and 95% hands on.

4) The RHCE Rapid book is great, its direct to the point. I wish they had this on PDF.

5) Everything builds on everything. You are constantly build skill by executing things over and over in different scenarios.

How did we do collectively?

1) Majority passed the RHCSA exam, some unfortunately, did not. Most for the same reason, unfortunately, I can not tell why

2) Even fewer passed the RHCE exam. Most ran out of time. I did too, but it was on when I was checking my work. I am glad I did, i found a blatant issue that takes 2 seconds to fix.

I did pass, RHCSA with a perfect score, and RHCE with lots of wiggle room. To be blunt, I had it planned out that I would fail the first attempts and have this month and part of next to re-take it.

So my main question is what is next? I do not have a clear plan what to do next. I spent this weekend thinking on it and researching. I see I do need a good virtualization cert, like VMWare or RHVA (?). I like to take a huge step away from microsoft windows. So let me know what your thoughts are, and maybe I can come up with a plan in a few days.

Warm Regards

Where to take RHCSA in Europe?

Hi,

unfortunately I can't take RedHat exams in VUE centers around the world. I did notice they have some test locations in Europe, one of them being in Vienna, Austria which is the closest to where I live but I can't speak any German and their AT website has a broken "Enroll Now" link so I don't know how to take the exam.

I did try the UK website and when browsing for locations I choose Vienna and it returns a bunch of dates but I don't know if those are exam dates or training dates, because the title says: Course Dates and Online Registrations System. Take a look here:

Red Hat Europe

If you accept the TOS and continue it returns:

It costs ?450 so it could be it, but there's no contact info so I can't ask them directly. I don't want to enroll and later find out I'm taking a class or something. RedHat is really not straightforward with this.

Wondering about my RHCSA score...

Hey,

This is the first IT vendor certificate exam I ever take. I just got my RHCSA result and I got 250/300 (pass is 210) and I'm confused. I've studied by myself from Michael Jang's book and I don't know what degrees people typically get. Should I feel bad about it? Is it just good enough to pass?

Either way, I'm taking RHCE next.

Cheers folks.

Edit: by the way, somehow I have an odd feeling that I should have gotten more than 250. I'm confused.

Certifications LPIC-1, NCLA, CCNA, Bunch of comptia and CIW certs I don't care about 11-29-2013 09:30 AM #2
I would recommend learning redhat 6. There are still people out there using redhat 4 and 5 as well as other distros altogether. You're not gonna get by in the linux world if you're not capable of adapting to both old and new technologies.
