2014 Dodge Durango [UPDATE]

2014 Dodge Durango

Say what you want about the Dodge Durango, but ever since it came on the scene in 1998, it has occupied its own niche in the SUV market – not too small, not too big, tough, able, not always the best on the road and not always the best off-road. If it were a football player, it would be a tight-end that can block and catch. If it were a hamburger – a double burger with cheese and bacon, but not the Whopper.

As part of a mid-cycle upgrade for what was already a very capable SUV that Chrysler introduced in 2011, and built on the same platform as the Mercedes GL-Class and Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2014 Durango has gotten some refinements worth noting that have cleaned up its tailoring and toned up its body and powerplant. The result is an SUV that shows itself to be a very good value in a category full of sticker prices that can run away faster than a kid who's been told he has to take ballroom dancing lessons.

Chrysler executives showing us the new Durango made a special point to reiterate that the Dodge brand is not going away, as has been rumored after the company took the Ram and Viper – the cream of the brand – out from under the Dodge umbrella. Turns out Dodge has been the brand attracting the most young people (who knew?) and has a younger average age buyer than Honda. The Dodge brand historically has also attracted buyers who aren't exactly Phi-Beta Cappa, which some companies worry about. Chrysler not so much. Dodge buyers tend to be more the working, high-school-educated, community-college-educated backbone of the work force in America. If they keep coming to Dodge, the Durango is a pretty good piece of hardware to save up for.

Driving Notes Power management has been executed very nicely. The Durango comes with either the familiar 5.7-liter Hemi V8 or the standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. We tested both around the canyons around Los Angeles, which meant we had highway time, as well as taking it around the twisties. The verdict? If you are a suburban kid-hauler and soccer-team coach using the Durango in lieu of a minivan, then by all means opt for the more fuel efficient and perfectly adequate V6. If, on the other hand, you have stuff to pull – boats, trailers, etc., then it's Hemi time. The V6 produces 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. The Hemi cranks 360 hp and 390 lb-ft.The fuel economy numbers are not official* for the Durango with the new eight-speed tranny, but the company says it results in a nine-percent hike. That will be an improvement over the following current numbers: a two-wheel-drive Durango is rated at 16/23 with the V6 and 14/20 with the V8. The all-wheel-drive setup knocks one percent off the V8's fuel economy, and doesn't impact the V6's mpg at all. Nice. By virtue of the improvement in fuel economy and size of the gas tank, Chrysler claims the Durango has the longest one-tank range of 600 miles in the category. Durango also has an Eco driving mode we tested and liked. That system fiddles with throttle sensitivity and cylinder-deactivation. The driver, though, can override that with the push of a button if it's not optimal for driving conditions or the vehicle's load.As mentioned, the Durango has been given Chrysler's new eight-speed automatic transmission. The new tranny works via the same sort of rotary knob as has been put into the Ram 1500 – a not-exactly-big innovation, but we are digging how it frees up real estate in the dash. It's a simple and elegant change that can become a signature of Ram and Dodge trucks and SUVs, and one we suspect rivals won't copy for fear of looking like followers. The exterior features a new grille look and taillights meant to elicit a racetrack aura that is defining Dodge's lamp design. We did not get a chance to try the towing package, but the specs say the the V6 will pull 6,200 pounds and the Hemi will tow 7,200 pounds.Chrysler has added to the Durango's trim levels menu by including a new "Limited" model to go along with the SXT, Rallye, R/T and Ted Turner-money top-o-the-line Citadel. The kit that comes with the Limited includes leather seats, heated seats and steering wheel, an 8.4-inch Uconnect screen and 18-inch wheels. Distinguishing the R/T and Rallye trims are a monochrome exterior, 20-inch black wheels, dual exhaust pipes and black accents around the headlights. LED running lights come standard on Rallye, Limited, R/T and Citadel, while R/T and Citadel get HID headlamps as well.In case you have missed it, every automaker is moving fast into "smart" systems to prevent collisions, pedestrian accidents and, if they could, your dog from peeing on the living room carpet when you're not home. Durango offers blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross-path alert that helps keep you from backing into a head-down texting driver or pedestrian, collision warning, crash mitigation that works the brakes better than many drivers can and driver's-side knee airbags.UConnect won AOL Autos' 2012 Technology of the Year Award for the upgraded system that was installed in the 2013 Ram 1500 and Viper. That system is in the Durango, with the added feature of a Yelp app that is pretty handy for finding what you want wherever you are. Taxidermy in LA? Yeah, it told us where to go. A new emergency-help button has been added as well. Entertainment screens have been moved into the seat-backs for backseat passengers, and out of the drop down position from the headliner in the old model.Because Chrysler sees Dodge as a "value brand," it has to price aggressively, and it is doing just that. The Durango's starting price is still $29,795, excluding destination. The Durango Limited starts at $35,995 (a bump of $800 over the 2013 Crew), while the R/T now starts at $38,995 (up $2,500). The Durango Citadel will start at $40,995 – an increase of $1,000. In true cheeky fashion, Dodge reps compared the price of the Citadel with a Mercedes GL that shares the same platform, has less equipment and costs more than $30K more if you get all the goodies on the GL that are on and in the Durango.UPDATE: Chrysler has provided official fuel economy numbers for the 2014 Durango: Rear-wheel drive V6 models achieve 18 miles per gallon city, 25 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. All-wheel drive models loose one mpg on each cycle. RWD V8 models achieve 14 mpg city, 23 highway and 17 combined, while AWD models register 14 city, 22 highway and 16 combined. Land Rover driver caught on video mowing down NYC motorcyclists [UPDATE]

Range Rover incident with motorcycles video

Video has emerged of an altercation between the driver of a Land Rover Range Rover Sport and a large group of motorcyclists. The incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon in New York City, looks to have been started when the Land Rover driver bumped one of the motorcyclists (it's difficult to tell from the video whose fault this was). The incident momentarily brought traffic to a standstill, but escalated anew when the SUV driver ran down a number of riders while attempting to leave the scene.

According to Britain's Daily Mail Online, the driver of the Land Rover told police he feared for his safety after being engulfed by the pack of slow-moving bikers. With his wife and young daughter in the vehicle, the driver attempted to flee, and his panicked escape attempt took out some of the bikers in the process. After catching up to him, the bikers tried to open the driver's door before he fled again. In a subsequent encounter, the Land Rover driver became snarled in traffic, providing a moment for one angry motorcyclist to smash the driver's window with his helmet. The video footage then ends.

According to the report, the NYPD says that the only reported injuries were to the driver of the Range Rover, despite the YouTube caption of the video claiming there was one fatality.

The helmet-mounted video can be viewed below. Be warned, the video is rather disturbing and might not be suitable for everyone. Take a look below to watch the footage, then have your say in Comments.

UPDATE: Subsequent reports indicate police say that a number of bikers beat up the Land Rover driver, causing black eyes, lacerations and injuries to his face and body. He was treated and released from Columbia University Medical Center. Police continue to investigate the incident.

Ford taken to task by gov't for Chicken Tax end-around [UPDATE]

Ford gets into trouble from selling its European-built Transit Connect cargo van as a passenger vehicle in the US.

Ford is in a bit of a pickle for importing and selling Turkey-built Transit Connect cargo vans as passenger vehicles in the US, then converting them to commercial-vehicle specification stateside in an effort to bypass a 25-percent tax imposed on vehicles imported for commercial use. Automakers are required to pay a 2.5-percent tax on imported passenger vehicles.

The Blue Oval got into trouble for this in a January ruling in which U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials asked Ford to stop the practice of importing the Transit Connect vehicles with passenger seats, then removing and shredding them. Now Automotive News reports that Ford is appealing the ruling. The 25-percent "Chicken Tax," as the tariff is often called, is 50 years old and was enacted as a response to a German tariff on chickens.

Like Ford, Mercede-Benz bypasses the higher tariff, but it does so in a different manner. According to Mercedes Product and Technology Communications Manager Christian Bokich, it partially disassembles Sprinter cargo vans before shipping them to the US, which includes removing the front axle, the engine (which is stamped with the vehicle identification number (VIN) and shipped separately) and "other pieces," then rebuilds them at a plant in South Carolina.

But the ruling against Ford's strategy states that it "serves no manufacturing or commercial purpose" and is there to "manipulate the tariff schedule," Automotive News reports. As Ford's appeal goes through, it is importing the Transit Connect and paying the higher tax, hoping for a favorable outcome and planning to build the next-generation Transit Connect, which it plans to launch before the end of the year, in Spain.

At the same time, Ford is lobbying the government to keep Japanese automakers paying the 25-percent tax on commercial vehicles, but that's because other non-tariff economic barriers make it extremely difficult to import vehicles to Japan.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated: "Like Ford, Chrysler bypasses the higher tariff, but it does so in a different manner. It partially disassembles Sprinter cargo vans before shipping them to the US, then rebuilds them at a plant in South Carolina." Though Chrysler previously engaged in this practice when it was part of DaimlerChrysler, the Fiat-owned automaker no longer sells Sprinter cargo vans. The text has since been corrected.

UPDATE 2-Rosneft offers lowball $1.5 bln for TNK-BP minorities

* Offer follows months of bickering

* TNK-BP shares up around 5 percent

* Concern over implications for minority shareholders (Recasts with comparative price, expected outcome)

By Vladimir Soldatkin

MOSCOW, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Oil group Rosneft is to buy the remaining shares in TNK-BP Holding for a fraction of the price it paid BP and a group of oligarchs for their stakes, in a worrying development for minority shareholders in Russian companies.

Rosneft bought the holding company and its parent TNK-BP last year in a $55 billion takeover that created the world's largest publicly traded oil company by output. Minority shareholders own about 5 percent of the unit, now renamed RN Holding.

The deal to buy them out for about $1.5 billion was announced by Rosneft on Monday, after months of tough talk and refusal to acquire the shares had sent jitters through the investor community and raised questions over corporate governance in Russia.

"It will leave a bad impression and raises concerns," said Chris Weafer, senior partner with consultancy Macro-Advisory.

"The next time a big state company is looking at an acquisition of a company, the investors will be immediately very wary of that situation. Minority investors will run ... rather than wait and see what will happen."

Rosneft said it planned to buy out holders of ordinary shares at 67 roubles ($2.07) per share and preferred shares at 55 roubles, the company said. In response, TNK-BP ordinary shares rose by almost 5 percent on Monday to 63.3 roubles, while Rosneft was down 1.27 percent.

But the offer disappointed some investors hoping to get closer to the $3.70 a share analysts calculated that oligarchs including Mikhail Fridman received at the time of the TNK-BP buyout. The other tycoons were German Khan, Viktor Vekselberg and Len Blavatnik.

"The offer is not that generous compared to the $3.70," said one shareholder who spoke on condition of anonymity, but did not comment on whether further steps would be taken.

"This is a bad offer," said Weafer. "The price they are offering to the minorities is almost half what Rosneft paid to BP and the oligarchs... and it sends a negative message."

'NOT A CHARITY'

Rosneft and its powerful president, Igor Sechin, had repeatedly said that the company had no obligation to buy the remaining shares. Sechin has said that Rosneft is not a "charity fund".

He changed his tone on Friday, however, saying that the company would consider buying the shares with a 20 to 30 percent premium to the market price.

Sources close to the minority shareholders have told Reuters that they think Rosneft should buy them out for $2.8 billion, based on what it paid for its majority stake in TNK-BP.

Sberbank CIB analysts said in a note: "The only shareholders who will benefit from this are speculators who bought the shares on the cheap during the long period of uncertainty - precisely the people whom Sechin said he wanted to punish."

Russian stocks trade at a near 50-percent discount to those of other emerging nations, reflecting foreign investors' worries over corruption, corporate governance and stalled efforts to modernise the economy.

Concerns about the treatment of minority shareholders have added to that sentiment.

Veteran investor Mark Mobius, executive chairman of Franklin Templeton's emerging markets group, said earlier in the year that the TNK-BP buyout "is the kind of issue that gives pause for thought on the behalf of investors coming to Russia".

Mobius, whose emerging markets fund has invested in TNK-BP, has around $1.2 billion invested in Russia. He was not available for immediate comment about Monday's offer.

Identity Services

Available for: iPhone 3GS and later, iPod touch (4th generation) and later, iPad 2 and later

Impact: Authentication relying on certificate-based Apple ID authentication may be bypassed

Description: An error handling issue existed in Identity Services. If the user's AppleID certificate failed to validate, the user's AppleID was assumed to be the empty string. If multiple systems belonging to different users enter this state, applications relying on this identity determination may erroneously extend trust. This issue was addressed by ensuring that NULL is returned instead of an empty string.

CVE-ID

CVE-2013-0963

International Components for Unicode

Available for: iPhone 3GS and later, iPod touch (4th generation) and later, iPad 2 and later

Impact: Visiting a maliciously crafted website may lead to a cross-site scripting attack

Description: A canonicalization issue existed in the handling of the EUC-JP encoding, which could lead to a cross-site scripting attack on EUC-JP encoded websites. This issue was addressed by updating the EUC-JP mapping table.

CVE-ID

UPDATE 2-German parliament backs Cyprus bailout

* Of 602 lawmakers, 487 vote in favour of Cyprus bailout
* Surprise vote by Cypriot lawmakers stokes uncertainty
* German opposition attacks government for first Cyprus plan
BERLIN, April 18 (Reuters) - Germany's lower house of parliament voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to grant Cyprus a 10 billion euro bailout that is designed to avert bankruptcy for the tiny Mediterranean island nation and keep it in the euro zone.
Of the 602 lawmakers in the Bundestag chamber, 487 backed the rescue, under which Cyprus has agreed to impose major losses on depositors, shutter its second largest bank and raise its corporate tax rate.
Separately, German parliamentarians also backed seven-year loan extensions for bailout victims Portugal and Ireland.
The Cyprus vote was not in doubt given widespread support from within German Chancellor Angela Merkel's centre-right coalition and backing by many opposition lawmakers from the Social Democrats and Greens.
However surprise news on Wednesday that the fractious Cypriot parliament is also likely to vote on the deal stoked new uncertainty over the fate of the rescue.
Before the vote, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble warned lawmakers that a failure to offer Cyprus aid would unleash contagion across the 17-nation single currency bloc.
"Step by step we are winning back confidence. If you look at the markets, there is still nervousness and uncertainty. But it is considerably less than three years, two years or one year ago," Schaeuble said in a speech.
"The aid for Cyprus secures the successes we've already achieved in the euro zone. We must prevent the problems in Cyprus from unleashing new problems in other euro zone countries."
He said that if Cyprus were allowed to go bankrupt, there was a "significant risk" of contagion to Greece and other vulnerable euro zone member states.
Responding to Schaeuble, the leader of the centre-left Social Democrats in parliament Frank-Walter Steinmeier said his party would support the bailout, but attacked the government for initially backing a plan to hit small savers in Cypriot banks.
That proposal was scrapped after a major backlash and the new bailout only hits people with deposits over 100,000 euros.
"Mr. Schaeuble, whether you asked for this or simply joined others in supporting it, it was a huge mistake. It stoked fear and insecurity in Europe," said Steinmeier.

UPDATE 1-Interim payment approved for Peregrine bankruptcy trustee

(Adds quotes from judge, trustee, context of case)

By Mark Weinraub and P.J. Huffstutter

CHICAGO, April 17 (Reuters) - The trustee in charge of returning funds to customers of scandal-ridden Peregrine Financial Group will receive an initial payment of $1.23 million for his role in unwinding the failed brokerage, a U.S. Bankruptcy Court judge ruled Wednesday.

U.S. bankruptcy code allows for the court-appointed trustee, Chicago lawyer Ira Bodenstein, to receive a commission of up to 3 percent of the $123.3 million that has been returned to former brokerage customers. The returned monies represents less than one-third of the funds customers had deposited with the futures broker when the firm collapsed and the accounts were frozen last July.

The initial payment is only part of the $3.7 million in compensation Bodenstein is seeking for his role in the bankruptcy proceedings, which represents the maximum 3 percent commission allowed under federal law.

While that sum may seem large, the Bankruptcy Court judge, Carol Doyle, said Wednesday that only one person had written a letter to the court to complain about the trustee's pay day request.

In a letter that Doyle read in part in court, the person - who claimed to have lost $100,000 - questioned why Bodenstein should make more money in "one fell swoop" than the defrauded Peregrine customer would make in a lifetime.

Peregrine Financial, known as PFGBest, collapsed last summer after its founder, Russell Wasendorf Sr, tried to kill himself just before regulators uncovered a customer fraud scheme going back decades. Wasendorf began serving a 50-year prison term in February for stealing close to $215 million from his customers.

Some 24,000 former customers are still missing most of the money they had invested with the firm. The money to pay Bodenstein will come from Peregrine's estates and would otherwise be used to pay back customers and creditors.

Bodenstein told Reuters after Wednesday's 20-minute hearing at federal Bankruptcy Court in Chicago that he expected the next distribution to Peregrine customers would be sometime in the summer, adding that he did not know how big the payments would be.

Bodenstein has described his compensation request as "appropriate in light of the results and benefits achieved through his efforts on behalf of the estate and its creditors," according to court papers. Among other things, Bodenstein's bill covers months worth of work, including travel, meetings and interviews with reporters, according to an itemized statement filed with the court.

Bodenstein refrained from asking for the full payment right away because he did not want to be seen as putting himself ahead of Peregrine's former customers, his lawyer, Robert Fishman, previously told Reuters. (Additional reporting by Tom Polansek and Ann Saphir; Editing by Leslie Adler)
