Microsoft reportedly names Ford, Nokia chiefs on CEO shortlist

Microsoft reportedly names Ford, Nokia chiefs on CEO shortlist Elop's in the running

How do you solve a problem like replacing Microsoft's outgoing CEO? Trimming the fat from a long list of potential candidates is one option, and it looks like the company has done just that.

According to Reuters' all-knowing anonymous sources, the software and services giant has whittled down a list of 40 potential candidates to leave at least four remaining.

They include ex-Nokia chief Steven Elop, former Skype CEO Tony Bates (who now runs Microsoft's business development), Ford CEO Alan Mulally and Satya Nadella, who oversees Microsoft's cloud and enterprise services unit.

All four names have been passed through the rumour mill in recent times - Elop has long been backed as Ballmer's potential successor due to Microsoft and Nokia's special relationship.

Ford's Mulally has repeatedly made clear his desire to stay at the motor company's helm until 2014, though he may be persuaded to pursue other glittering opportunities should they arise, according to Reuters' sources.

Names not to appear in the list include ex-Windows chief Steven Sinofsky (who appeared in our own list of six potential candidates) and former Juniper Networks CEO Kevin Johnson.

Microsoft has until August 2014 to find a replacement for Ballmer after the larger-than-life exec announced his departure from the company in a blaze of teary, Dirty Dancing-styled glory.

Google reportedly mulling $1B Waze bid, could spark bidding war with FacebookBy AppleInsider Staff

According to Bloomberg sources, Google is looking to throw in a $1 billion bid for Waze, possibly portending a bidding war between the search giant and Facebook, which is also rumored to be eyeing an acquisition of the social mapping service.

People familiar with the matter told Bloomberg that Waze is managing "expressions of interest" from multiple parties, and is targeting a selling price of at least $1 billion. Alternatively, the firm may seek venture capital financing in order to stay independent.

Waze
A report earlier in May claimed Facebook was in talks to pick up Waze, with the purchase positioning the social network to enter an already cramped market led by Google Maps. Facebook's bid was also said to be around $1 billion.

The sources went on to say that Google only approached Waze after chatter of the Facebook bid went public, suggesting the tech monolith is looking to block Facebook from entering the mapping game.

The publication notes that a deal is far from being reached, and talks may fall apart as Waze's user base is substantial enough to raise funding privately. As of April, Waze had over 40 million people using its service.

In January, Apple too was rumored to be interested in purchasing the startup to bolster its iOS Maps app, but the claims turned out to be false. Sources on Thursday confirmed the Cupertino, Calif., company is not currently part of the talks.

As for Waze's existing investors, the company managed to successfully raise $30 million in a 2011 funding round led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Horizons Ventures Hong Kong. Microsoft is also said to be an investor, as is Magma Venture Partners, Vertex Venture Capital and BlueRun Ventures.

The iOS app is free to download from the App Store, and features TomTom-like functionality like automatic reporting of traffic data. Social aspects include community-generated real-time routing, live maps and an accident reporting system, among others standard navigation features.Tags:GoogleFacebookMapsWazeJump to comments (39)Categories:General(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Tweet!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); On Topic: GeneralFoxconn may sell own branded accessories after Apple profits dipReview: Scosche enters car radio fray with iOS connected controlFREQWorking Apple I fetches $671,400 in German auctionGoogle's Motorola issues second appeal of dismissed ITC case against AppleSouth Australia's first Apple Store draws line hours ahead of opening [update: photos and video]Today's' HeadlinesFoxconn may sell own branded accessories after Apple profits dipApple's iPhone sales tactics in Europe under antitrust investigationRelated ArticlesFacebook reportedly in talks to buy social mapping service WazeApple may acquire crowd-sourced traffic and navigation service WazeApple-Waze social mapping acquisition 'not happening'Apple and Google reportedly partners in $500M bid for Kodak patentsApple Maps directions beat Google Maps, Waze in pundit's head-to-head testPrevious Comments View Allhill602013/05/23 08:57pm

...but, but, but Google maps are already perfect.

Why would they need to buy another mapping company?

I was thinking similar.? Not that Google maps was perfect, but what was the point of them buying something else?

buckalec2013/05/23 09:25pm

heavy rain in NYC ?today - roads and flooding everywhere, did a control at 5:56pm ET (so sick of the google PR spin map spin machine and sad pathetic "journalists"?) and saved to photos. Once again, since the beginning, I used Apple Maps to get me home. Clean & simple. Tufte would be proud.

Typical of Google &/or Facebook to spend a billion for something worth orders of magnitude less.

Remember Motorola?

Agree. What would Waze have that they (1) want and (2) are willing to pay that much to get? They would have to know Apple isn't interested at that price point and I can't imagine it would be just to keep it out of Facebook's hands? Are they really a threat? What even would Facebook do with them?

Simple Google wants to keep it out of the hands of anyone else as it could rival their own offerings. Purely defensive.

jungmark2013/05/23 09:58pm

Google, Don't make me have to uninstall Waze!

jivanile2013/05/23 10:01pm

Does anyone else think the "but, but, but" thing needs to stop. ?It seems to come up at least once in every thread, sometimes more. ?It's overplayed so please stop.

slurpy2013/05/23 10:14pm

I think Apple needs this, or foursquare.
Buying foursquare would be amazing.

jsmythe002013/05/23 10:20pm

side bar: what i think apple needs to do is buy a carrier. or bandwidth and have mobile services thats caters specifically to ios

AT&T to reportedly add Apple's iPhone to GoPhone prepaid lineupBy AppleInsider Staff

The nation's second-largest carrier AT&T will reportedly add Apple's iPhone to the list of devices customers can buy through its GoPhone prepaid brand on Friday, with the handset coming alongside the activation of 4G LTE and HSPA+ support for the service.

GoPhone
According to MacRumors, the addition of the iPhone to GoPhone's lineup is part of a larger expansion of services set to take place on Friday, as AT&T will start offering prepaid customers access to its LTE and HSPA+ data network for the first time.

While iPhone owners have been able to use the prepaid service for some time, the terms never allowed for data network access, rendering many of the Apple handset's capabilities useless.

Pricing will be arranged in three separate packages. At the top is a $65 per month plan which comes with unlimited calling and 1 gigabyte of data, while both the $50 and $25 monthly voice plans require an add-on fee for data.

Existing iPhone owners using GoPhone will automatically be updated with data access on June 21, though they have the option to manually upgrade to the new service.

The news comes amidst a strong push for the iPhone from other U.S. prepaid carriers like Virgin Mobile, which last week debuted a 15 percent discount for iPhone 5 purchases made through its website. Regional carrier Cricket Wireless helped raise the handset's marketshare after kicking off sales last year, while a rumored deal with Boost Mobile is said to be in the works.Tags:AT&TJump to comments (20)Categories:iPhone(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk'));Tweet!function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(!d.getElementById(id)){js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js";fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}}(document,"script","twitter-wjs"); On Topic: iPhoneApple's iPhone sales tactics in Europe under antitrust investigationCradle attachment turns Apple's iPhone into handheld biosensoriPhone urinalysis app draws scrutiny from FDABest Buy to offer $50 off all iPhone 5 & 4S models starting SundayNew service delivers passes for Apple's Passbook via text messageToday's' HeadlinesFoxconn may sell own branded accessories after Apple profits dipApple's iPhone sales tactics in Europe under antitrust investigationRelated ArticlesPrepaid iPhone coming to Virgin Mobile USA by July - reportApple's iPhone 5 to launch on US prepaid carrier Cricket Sept. 28Apple's iPhone coming to Virgin Mobile with $30/mo. plans June 29Briefly: Virgin Mobile offers 15% discount on prepaid iPhone 4/4SAmerica's first prepaid iPhone arrives on Cricket Wireless June 22Previous Comments View Allgazoobee2013/05/24 01:20am

"The news comes amidst a strong push for the iPhone from other U.S. prepaid carriers like Virgin Mobile, which last week debuted a 15 percent discount for iPhone 5 purchases made through its website."

The last time I checked, VM wasn't offering the iPhone 5, much less a 15% discount on said device.

Cheers.

Only 5 GB? I pay $45 for unlimited data, voice, and text at Straight Talk.

pk229012013/05/24 08:09am

So what? AT&T and Verizon are still government supported bandits sucking our $$$$ s away.

Good news: Check T'Mobile's family rate LAN for 5 phones. Unlimited text, voice, and 500 MB data for $22/month/smartphone (including iPhone). That's $120/month total vs ATTs $300 ! And Verizon is worse!

What's going on? Well, watch out AT&T and Verizon! You're arrogant pricing is soon to die.

Bad News: T'Mobile's network is sparse and in some parts, their plan is not available or too weak. But they're building their network out and all we need to do is patient, alert, and spring when the buildout makes it a feasible choice in our locale.

Alert in Cville, VA...

alphafox2013/05/24 08:50am

I pay $55 per line for unlimited voice / txt and 10gb data pool on 5 lines with att and a corporate discount. 1wink.gif

What in the world are you talking about? Is it physically impossible within the laws of physics of this branch of the multiverse for AT&T to add the EXISTING MODELS OF IPHONE to their service or something?

johnny mozzarella2013/05/24 10:14am

After more than a decade with AT&T, I am switching to Virgin Mobile. Instead of $70 I'll be paying $40/iPhone. I calculate a savings of about $1500 over the next 2 years. I can deal with having the 4S for another year or two.

When you read the fine print for Straight Talk, none of it is really unlimited. You should try it sometime.?

?

On that note, I'm switching over to Net10 starting next month. They're more honest, and clearly state AT&T-compatible is limited to 1.5GB of data ANY WAY YOU WANT TO USE IT, minus tethering... I'm not going to point it out again, so you'll have to read Straight Talk's terms of service for yourself.?
