Microsoft Plans Windows 8.1 Public Preview, Hints at Start Button

A senior Microsoft official confirmed on Tuesday that Microsoft's forthcoming OS update will be called "Windows 8.1", promising a public preview on June 26. Tami Reller, CMO and CFO of Microsoft's Windows Division, also hinted that Windows 8.1 might see a return of the Start Button, and that it will be released in time for this year's holiday season.

The public preview of Windows 8.1 will be made at the start of its Build 2013 developers conference, Reller said, speaking at JP Morgan's Technology, Media & Technology Conference on Tuesday.

Windows 8.1 will then be delivered "later in the calendar year," she noted. Reller would not elaborate, except to say that, "We know when the holidays are." The Windows 8.1 update will be released for both Windows 8 and Windows RT.

Expands on Earlier Statements

In a blog post last week, Reller also gave the 2013 calendar year as the time frame for formal release, but she didn't identify the name of the update, beyond referring to it by its codename, Windows Blue.

Also in that blog, Reller gave vague descriptions of the update, maintaining that it will "deliver the latest new innovations across an increasingly broad array of form factors of all sizes, display, battery life and performance, creating new opportunities for our ecosystem."

The update is also "an opportunity for us to respond to the customer feedback that we've been closely listening to since the launch of Windows 8 and Windows RT," she said in last week's blog.

Return of the Start Button?

Meanwhile, rumors have flown that the update will include a return of the Start Button to Windows. A leak of a build that went out over the Internet in March did not show a Start Button.

However, at the JP Morgan conference on Tuesday, Reller dropped what could be a new clue.

"It will be easy to get from the Windows Start Screen," Reller said.

Download and install the latest version of iTunes. See "Can't burn a CD in iTunes for Windows" for basic troubleshooting steps. If you continue to have difficulty, then continue with the additional troubleshooting steps below. Resolution

If after following the instructions in this document you still can't read or burn discs, try the following:

Try other software Open a different music player, such as Windows Media Player, and test if it can play a CD you've burned. Open the CD burning software that came with your computer or disc drive, and test to see if it can burn a CD.

If you're not able to read or burn discs using other software, there may be a more general issue with your computer or the drive. You should probably contact your computer or drive manufacturer for help. In the mean time, try the tips below.

Use good blank discs

Some brands of blank discs may work better with your drive than others. Check the disc manufacturer's website for the brand of blank discs you are using. Many brands post lists of drives that have issues burning to their discs. They may also publish tips on how to troubleshoot burning issues.

You can use the chart below as a general guideline to assess what types of CD-R media are compatible with different drive types.

Check for software updates

Microsoft or your computer's manufacturer may have released updated software. Check to see if there are updates to Windows or to the software that controls the drive. Check your computer manufacturer's website for updates, particularly for updates to the CD or DVD drive. If you bought the drive separately from the computer, check the drive manufacturer's website. See this document for additional information on updating software for Windows.

Check for firmware updates

From time to time manufacturers publish updates to a CD or DVD drive's internal software (known as firmware). Check your computer manufacturer's website for firmware updates first. This is important because the internal drives used by some companies (including Dell) require special firmware. If an update is not available from the computer manufacturer, check with the company that made the drive.

Updating your drive's firmware is a particularly good troubleshooting step if iTunes is showing a 2122, 2123, or 2131 error when trying to burn a CD. For optical drives manufactured by Aopen, firmware updates can be downloaded at http://download.aopen.com.tw/.

Important: Use special care when installing firmware updates. Incorrectly installing a firmware update could damage the drive and make it unusable. Always check with the computer manufacturer first before checking with the drive manufacturer.

Tip: If you need help with the next two steps, contact the company that manufactured your computer or drive.

Check hardware configuration

Check if your computer's drive is capable of Direct Memory Access (DMA). If so, turn on that feature and make sure the drive is not set to use Programmed Input Output (PIO). DMA and PIO are two ways a drive can be configured to connect and transfer data to a computer. PIO is the slower method. This could affect the drive's performance. If you have two drives, make sure the other drive is not using PIO either. It could affect the drive you are trying to use with iTunes. Check with the computer or drive manufacturer for additional information.

To turn on DMA:

Open Device Manager (right-click on My Computer (Windows XP and Windows 2000) or Computer (Windows Vista and Windows 7) and in the shortcut menu, click Manage) Select Device Manager. Click the plus sign, or arrow, next to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

Right-click on the IDE bus that contains the optical drive and in the shortcut menu, click Properties. Click the Advanced Settings tab.
Make sure the Transfer Mode for the devices on the bus is set to DMA if available, not PIO Only.

Check drive audio cable

Some internal drives (such as the MediaStor CD-R/RW 52x24x52x) have a 2- to 4-pin analog audio cable that must be plugged into the main motherboard. This is in addition to the wider 40- to 80-pin ATA or IDE cable that connects the drive to the logic board. If the analog audio cable is not plugged in, the drive can behave in erratic ways.

Remove iPod and test

If you connect your iPod to the computer via USB and you use a USB burner, try ejecting and disconnecting iPod before trying to burn.

Additional Information

You can also use a Windows 8 DVD to install Windows on your computer if you have an external USB optical drive. This requires a few more steps than the process above.

Attach an external optical drive and put the Windows 8 Install DVD in it. After the drive appears on the desktop, choose Utilities from the Go menu. Open Boot Camp Assistant Click Continue. Click the box next to "Download the latest Windows support software from Apple" and "Install Windows 7 or later version" so a checkmark appears in the box.  Click Continue. You'll be asked to attach the USB media (flash drive or hard drive) that the Windows Support Software (drivers) can be installed on. Caution: All data on the USB media will be erased during this process. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the creation of the media. If you want to create your own driver installation media without using the Boot Camp Assistant, click here and follow the instructions on the download page. Keep the USB media that contains the drivers connected to your Mac's USB port. You will be asked to create a partition on which to install Windows 8. Use the slider to select the partition size and click Install. After partitioning is complete, your Mac will restart. Wait for the startup chime to sound, then hold the Option key until you see startup drive options. Note: Holding down the option key is critical to a successful DVD installation. The MacBook Pro will attempt to boot to the USB media instead of the DVD if the Option key is not held down at the chime. If you miss the chime and the screen goes black, or you see a "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" or other message, try this: Power off the computer by holding the power button. When the computer powers off, press the power button again to power on the computer. Hold down the Option key when the chime sounds until you see startup drive options. Click the Windows DVD icon, then click the up arrow underneath it. Your Mac will now start to the Windows installer. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the Windows 8 installation. $('articlecontent').select('img').each(function(element) { if(element.width > 640 ){ var imageDiv = document.createElement('div'); imageDiv.setStyle({ 'display':'block', 'width':'660px', 'overflow':'auto', 'border':'1px solid #dedede','margin-right': '15px'}); element.parentNode.replaceChild(imageDiv, element); imageDiv.appendChild(element); } }); $('articlecontent').select('table').each(function(element) { if(element.width > 660 || element.offsetWidth>660){ var tableDiv = document.createElement('div'); tableDiv.setAttribute("class","kbtablecontainer"); element.setAttribute("style","margin-bottom:0px !important"); element.parentNode.replaceChild(tableDiv, element); tableDiv.appendChild(element); } }); Important: Information about products not manufactured by Apple is provided for information purposes only and does not constitute Apple’s recommendation or endorsement.
