Tas offers first home builders $30,000

TASMANIA has announced the country's most generous first home builder grant, doubling its offering to $30,000.

Premier Lara Giddings says the First Home Builder Boost could result in people priced out of housing markets in Sydney and Melbourne heading to the struggling island state.

"This assistance is now the most generous in the country and will act as a significant incentive for interstate migration which, in itself, is an important economic driver," Ms Giddings said in a statement.

The state government previously doubled the grant to $15,000 last year.

The premier said the grant, which will be available for 12 months, was part of her response to a jobs forum convened to address the state's nation-high 8.2 per cent unemployment rate.

The Northern Territory offers $25,000 and other state governments $10,000-15,000, including $7000 from a federal scheme.

The Housing Industry Association has welcomed the Tasmanian boost.

"If you're going to do something, I think you need to do something that's bold and brazen and has a bit of courage to it and I think this is it," spokesman Stuart Clues told the ABC.

"If this doesn't get people excited, you might as well give the game away."

First aid kits for SA police dog handlers

SA police patrol dog Koda and his handler, Simon Rosenhahn SA police dog handlers are to carry compact first aid kits after the stabbing of a patrol dog. Source: AAP

SOUTH Australia's police dog handlers are to carry compact first aid kits for their canines following the recent stabbing of patrol dog Koda.

The German shepherd was rested for about five weeks after being stabbed in August as police chased and arrested a man over a spate of break-ins in Adelaide's northern suburbs.

The Animal Welfare League, In Wingfield, has now put together the kit so handlers will be able to provide initial first aid.

Each kit includes vet wrap bandage, dressings, saline solution, antiseptic, scissors, forceps and a shock blanket, all contained in a pouch small enough to fit into a handler's pocket.

Koda's handler, Senior Constable Simon Rosenhahn, praised the initiative.

"We work solo the vast majority of the time and sometimes in the middle of the scrub, a long, long way from help," he said on Wednesday.

"When Koda was stabbed, we were a long way from the police vehicle so it was hard to act quickly to ensure he didn't lose too much blood."

The stabbing prompted the SA to propose new laws and tougher penalties for attacks on police animals.

South Australian police currently use 25 dogs and 36 horses.

Pictures from the scene, sent to AppleInsider by reader Jonathan, show about 30 people waiting for the grand opening of Apple's Rundle Place location, the first brick-and-mortar shop the company has set up in South Australia. The first people in line started showing up at 8:30 p.m. last night. Currently, local time in Adelaide is about 7 a.m., well ahead of the scheduled 10 a.m. door opening.

According to Apple's website, the Rundle Place Apple Store will boast a Genius Bar, in-store workshops, One to One service and business-class offerings, as well as free youth programs like Youth Workshops, Field Trips and Apple Camp.

iPad shipments could see first ever year-on-year decline in Q2, analyst saysBy Mikey Campbell

Due to a combination of seasonality and heightened competition from Android device makers, shipments of Apple's iPad may see a year-on-year drop for the first time since debuting in 2010, says KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

iPad mini
In a note to investors obtained by AppleInsider, Kuo said that overall iPad shipments will experience a quarter-to-quarter decline of 20 to 25 percent, or 10 to 15 percent year-on-year, for the second quarter of 2013. The analyst based his prediction on sell-through, which is expected to hit 14 to 15 million units for the three-month period.

The dip shipments is thought to be a result of a glut of cheap Android tablet offerings this year, as well as a high comparison base from 2012 when the third-generation iPad launched.

Driving the decline is lowered iPad mini shipments, which are believed to see a roughly 40 percent quarter-on-quarter drop. Overall, Kuo forecasts a sell-in of around 12.7 million units for the three month period ending in June. Breaking the numbers down by model, the iPad mini is expected to see 6.2 million units shipped, while the latest fourth-generation iPad will see 4.5 million units. The entry-level iPad 2 will likely come in at around 2 million units shipped.

Finally, Kuo notes the third quarter will see growth as seasonality and an expected launch of a fifth-generation iPad boost shipments to first-quarter levels. However, the analyst points out that success is highly contingent on how attractive the supposedly slimmed-down "iPad 5" is to consumers.

A recent study conducted by IDC saw the iPad's share of the overall table market dip to 40 percent during the first quarter of the year. Year-over-year growth was still positive at 65 percent, but rival manufacturers Samsung and ASUS saw their share of the sector jump 283 percent and 350 percent from the year ago period, respectively. There were always cheap tablets. That is not what is different about the second quarter.

rogifan2013/05/24 08:49pm

Hmm...a retina mini and thinner/lighter 5th gen iPad probably coming in the fall....nah that couldn't have anything to do with decline....

The difference is that cheap people are getting around to buying tablets. And people who aren't cheap already bought theirs.

jaayco2013/05/24 09:13pm

Does anyone seriously believe the 40% number? Maybe if we stopped comparing shipped android vs sold iPads... Who here lives somewhere that a majority of tablets they see in use are something other than an iPad? It's certainly not the case here in Australia.

jd_in_sb2013/05/24 09:17pm

Blockbuster numbers in the fall should take care of this dip.

lerxt2013/05/24 09:19pm

Asia is now Samsung territory, Apple product use has significantly declined. That has got to have a lot to do with it.

teaearlegreyhot2013/05/24 09:25pm

Something very fishy here. ?This story is current, right? ?And the analyst is predicting second quarter Apple results?

?

Quote:Kuo said that overall iPad shipments will experience a quarter-to-quarter decline of 20 to 25 percent, or 10 to 15 percent year-on-year, for the second quarter of 2013.?

?

Apple reported Second Quarter 2013 results on April 23rd, almost a month ago.

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2013/04/23Apple-Reports-Second-Quarter-Results.html

?

So Mr. Kuo can't even get his predictions right IN HINDSIGHT... ?This quote from the Apple link above:

?

Quote:Apple also sold 19.5 million iPads during the quarter, compared to 11.8 million in the year-ago quarter.

?

Now perhaps he's trying to make some statement about calendar year quarter 2, rather than fiscal year quarter 2, but in that case since Apple's quarters vary from other companies, it's going to be difficult to make an apples-to-apples comparison. ?Either way, I think Mr. Kuo is an apple short of a full bushel.

robin huber2013/05/24 09:39pm

IPad shipments aren't perpetually up quarter over quarter? Apple is doomed.

(Note from three years ago: "what's an iPad?")

macosxaddict2013/05/24 10:09pm

It is not really a fair YOY quarter comparision as last years quarter had a new iPad released in it while this years quarter has no new iPads.

drblank2013/05/24 10:10pm

I think there is a pent up demand for the new iPad 5 and iPad mini replacement. That's typically what happens.

First Look Review: AMD Showcases New Processors

If you're looking for a quick and dirty summary of what these new processors offer then here are the highlights:

The 2013 AMD "Elite Mobility" APU (formerly codenamed "Temash") is the world's first 28nm, quad-core x86 APU. AMD claims it delivers the best graphics and gaming experience of any System on a Chip (SoC) for touch-enabled, small form-factor notebooks, tablets and hybrids. This group of processors is available  in dual (A4) and quad-core (A6) configurations, combining "Jaguar" x86 Central Processing Unit (CPU) cores with Graphics Core Next AMD Radeon HD 8000 Series graphics.

The 2013 AMD "Mainstream" APU (formerly codenamed "Kabini") similarly offers best-in-class graphics and was designed to deliver the ideal balance between function and affordability for entry-level and small-form factor touch notebooks. Kabini combines either two or four Jaguar x86 CPU cores with Graphics Core Next AMD Radeon HD 8000 Series graphics.

The new, low power versions of the 2013 AMD "Elite Performance" APU (formerly codenamed "Richland") are the top-of-the-line AMD A-Series APUs with A8 and A10 models designed for the best possible graphics and compute performance and battery life for premium ultrathin notebooks.

"Kabini" is the successor to AMD's highly successful "Brazos" line of accelerated processing units (APUs) which combined traditional central processing units (CPUs) with graphics processing units (GPUs) on a single chip. Brazos was first introduced in January 2011 and has been the cournerstone of AMD's mobile processor offerings. The latest Mercury Research PC Processor Report, published in the second quarter of 2013, estimates total shipments of "Zacate", "Brazos" and "Brazos 2.0" were more than 48 million units. AMD expects to see even larger numbers of "Kabini" and "Temash" processors shipping as they deliver increased performance per watt, performance per dollar and have lower TDP so these processors can fit inside smaller form factors such as hybrid notebooks and "performance tablets" in 2013.

One of the biggest updates to these new processors is AMD's new "Turbo Core" technology. For Kabini and Temash the A6-1450 is the first product to support Turbo Core. This feature uses a multitude of power management techniques to deliver high performance with minimal heat increase and lower power concumption. In essence, Turbo Core dynamically analyzes the type of activity your PC is doing and can increase or decrease power to each individual processor core ... both on the CPU and GPU side of the processor.

So, if you're running an application that doesn't take advantage of a multicore CPU, Turbo Core will increase the speed of one core and completely power off the others. If you're playing a game that mostly involves the graphics performance of the GPU and not the CPU then Turbo Core will speed up the GPU and reduce power to the CPU.

This is a large part of the reason that an A4 chip from the Kabini family can outperform an A6 processor from last year.

Now let's take a closer look at how the A4-5000M Kabini processor performs in real life ...
